6. Preventing fatigue damage
Unlike previous types of damage, which are global and affect the overall behavior of the structure, fatigue is local damage resulting from strain variations imposed in zones of strain concentration or at the surface of walls subjected to significant thermal gradients, particularly in zones where fluids are mixed at different temperatures.
After a certain period of use, this local damage can lead to crack initiation and propagation. The aim of the code's rules is to limit the risk of initiation by means of layout rules, and to use analysis to guarantee the absence of macroscopic crack initiation that could jeopardize the prevention of other damage modes.
