Under French law, "radioactive waste" is any man-made material containing natural or artificial radionuclides whose activity or concentration justifies radiation protection control, and for which no further use is planned or envisaged. This definition is taken up by the Joint Convention, which specifies it at institutional level. The aim of radiation protection monitoring is to check whether or not the dispersion of the waste in the environment, or its undifferentiated use, satisfies health requirements. The immediate or long-term fate of any radioactive material is therefore defined by regulations and administrative authorizations, which are the responsibility of both the waste producer and the authorities.
