Figure 3 gives an overview of the different stages in the manufacture of plutonium fuel.

The reference process used for fuel for the Phénix and Superphénix reactors is known as COCA (acronym for "cobroyage Cadarache").

Characterized powders of UO ₂ , PuO ₂ and chamotte, a mixed oxide derived from the grinding of recycled scrap, are assayed to achieve the specified plutonium content, and checked for compliance with other constraints: stoichiometry, americium content...
