4. AC voltage adaptation: transformer

4.1 Transformers and chokes

Under single-phase catenary, the transformer lowers the voltage – 25 kV (50 or 60 Hz) or 15 kV (16.7 Hz) – to a level suitable for traction motor operation: from 1,500 to 2,000 V.
