The power of a genset is defined as the power available at the alternator terminals, minus the electrical power absorbed by the essential auxiliaries. It is expressed in kW, at the frequency of definition and with a power factor of 0.8.

Generator power ratings must be defined in accordance with the maintenance plans and schedules specified by the manufacturer of the engine, alternator and switchgear.

In addition to all the guaranteed power ratings, there is the additional power required for control purposes (sudden load applications). This additional power, which is generally equal to 10% of the unit's rated power, must not be used to permanently power the load.
