The insulators are selected :
as a function of line operating voltage ;
depending on the mechanical stresses to which they are subjected (weight of conductors and ice, wind action, mechanical tension of conductors, if any) ;
with regard to their nature (rigid or suspended), depending on the cost of the line and its size; in general, for small cross-sections (< 50 mm

), a line on rigid insulators is less expensive than a line on suspended insulators, at least in regions not subject to significant climatic overloads;
depending on site pollution.
