Ensuring visual comfort aims to avoid workplace hazards and adapt lighting technologies to working conditions.

Ergonomic diagnosis focuses on the perception of luminance and average illuminance for different visual tasks (NF EN 12464-1).

For example, the activity of reading and writing a paper document (with a reflection factor of 0.80) requires an average illuminance to be maintained of 500 lx on the visual task, in accordance with standard NF EN 12464-1. If the operator is over 45 years of age, visual performance deteriorates with age; the average illuminance to be maintained is increased to 750 lx, rising to 1,000 lx if the situation presents risks. This Emoy illuminance (in lx) is given on the reference surface of the work area where the visual task (work requiring adequate lighting) is performed.
