5. Outlook for fuels
The fuels of all categories examined here meet the growing demand for fast, efficient, reliable and comfortable transport that characterizes the modern world. Their decline or disappearance, in their present form, would imply a total overhaul of lifestyles and cannot therefore be envisaged in the short or medium term. We can, however, discern a few trends over the next few years.
5.1 Quantity demand
Between 1938 and 2000, i.e. in just over 60 years, the number of cars on the road worldwide rose from 43 million to over 700 million; the one-billion mark is likely to be passed between 2010 and 2015, and some longer-term forecasts point to a global fleet of 2.5 billion vehicles in 2060, over 70% of which will be in regions where car ownership is currently very low...
