2.1 Hydraulic and geographical constraints
Sites where the tidal range is large enough to justify the use of tidal energy are rather rare. For the construction of a tidal installation to be economically viable, the site must offer amplitudes of at least 5 m, comprise a natural basin (gulfs, bays, estuaries, etc.) capable of retaining a significant quantity of water at high tide, or generate significant currents usable by tidal turbines.
To choose a tidal site, a large tidal range is not a sufficient criterion. Large tidal ranges are often associated with weak tidal currents, when they occur at the bottom of gulfs. The available tidal energy of a sea basin is the natural energy of the site, whose order of magnitude is...
