. Their combination enables physico-chemical treatment or materials synthesis.
For example, heating and rapid cooling of a metal surface can harden it; melting and vaporization can purify materials; and vaporization, combined with controlled cooling of vapors, can synthesize nanomaterials.
For materials qualification, solar heating is usually coupled with another constraint, such as a plasma discharge (planetary re-entry simulation), or an ion gun (materials for fusion reactors).
