1. Decarbonizing Industrial Heat Demand

Industrial heat demand is characterized by two distinct temperature peaks. The first, between 60 and 120 °C, covers drying, light distillation, sterilization, and fluid heating processes – in the agri-food, paper, and chemical sectors. The second, above 1,400 °C, is specific to the metals and glass industries, which require very high temperatures for melting. This bimodality calls for radically different technological solutions depending on the sector.

Three main drivers shape the decarbonization of industrial heat:

  • improving energy efficiency and recovering waste heat – a driver of immediate cost savings;

  • replacing fossil fuels with low-carbon fuels (biomass, biogas, green hydrogen);

  • direct or indirect electrification via heat pumps.
