3. Replacing fossil fuels with low-carbon fuels
Low-carbon fuels are derived from biomass (agricultural residues, wood, organic waste, energy crops) or produced through electrochemical conversion (green hydrogen, biogas). The carbon neutrality of biomass depends on the condition that the material burned is replenished within a reasonable timeframe.
3.1 Solid, liquid, and gaseous biomass
Solid biomass (wood pellets, wood chips, straw): a mature solution suitable for industrial boilers ranging from 100 kW to 50 MW, with process temperatures up to 500 °C.
Biogas/biomethane: direct substitute for natural gas in existing boilers, without major modifications to the burners. Injection into the grid or a dedicated circuit.
