2. Shipping emissions
Essential to today's economy, global trade, mainly based on freight transport, has multiple environmental effects. Today, the transport sector is responsible for around 15% of global CO2 emissions (figure 14). Roughly 40 Gt of CO2 are emitted each year as a result of human activities, 80% of which are linked to the use of fossil fuels, and 10% to deforestation and part of cement production. More specifically, in 2019, global CO2 emissions attributable to the use of carbon-based energy in fact amount to just over 35 Gt (billion tonnes), including 5.25 Gt for transport.
