To be used for the transport of dangerous goods in "packages", an "ESPT" or an "IBC" must be approved, i.e. the "ESPT" or "IBC" model must be manufactured according to a standard model approved by the authority in charge of the transport of dangerous goods, and its production must be carried out by a manufacturer working under quality assurance, under the periodic supervision (by audit) of an approved inspection body.

To obtain approval, typical "ESPT" or "IBC" models must comply with certain technical construction specifications (type of materials, assembly method, etc.) and pass various strength tests:
