1. Basics of oxidation

There are two types of oxidation reaction: those involving electron transfer and those based on a radical mechanism.

1.1 Electron transfer reactions

Oxidation is a chemical reaction in which a reducing (or electron-donating) compound gives up electrons. Reduction is a gain of electrons by an oxidizing (or electron-accepting) compound.
