5. Conclusion: an organizational approach to industrial risk management

The transposition of the defense-in-depth concept to industrial activities constitutes a formal risk prevention framework based on the implementation of physical barriers and organizational and structural lines of defense, which are themselves redundant, complementary and independent of one another. These various defensive measures are deployed on five levels of protection, covering incident and accident prevention, detection and control of abnormal operations, accident control and management, and emergency response.

The contribution of this transposition is envisaged within the framework of conducting risk analyses of ICPEs according to at least two aspects:

1) as a means of demonstrating site safety, in particular through the use of deterministic and probabilistic approaches to risk analysis;
