Dust explosion risks - Prevention and protection

It is common to represent a dust explosion as the result of three contributions represented in the fire triangle (figure 1 ):

• presence of fuel ;

• presence of air or oxidizing oxygen ;

• presence of a priming source.

To make an explosion impossible, we need to eliminate at least one of these factors.

We can therefore :

• prevent the formation of a mixture of dust and air ;

• replace the oxygen with an inert gas (inerting) or work in a vacuum, or phlegmatize the dust by mixing it with non-combustible dust;

• eliminate sources of ignition....
