6. How to classify samples?
When the class of a substance is not precisely known and the substance is being transported for further testing, a provisional classification is assigned, taking into account the information available:
in accordance with the class weighting system in § 2.1.3.5.3 and § 2.1.3.10 presented in step 2 ;
using the worst-case classification, corresponding to the highest level of hazard, in case of doubt.
The UN number should be the most appropriate n.o.s. entry for the class, supplemented by the words "SAMPLE", unless a specific UN number exists.
Example:
N.O.S. entry: UN1993 FLAMMABLE LIQUID N.O.S., SAMPLE, 3, II, (D/E) ;
specific heading: UN3167 GAS SAMPLE, NON-COMPRESSED,...
