Reduce hazard potential
How to integrate chemical risks into hazard studies

Before going any further with the preliminary risk analysis (PRA), it is necessary to reduce hazard potential at source. This involves four principles:

• substitution principle: a dangerous product is replaced by a less dangerous one;

• principle of intensification: reducing the volume of equipment;

• Mitigation principle: less dangerous process parameters are defined (lower temperature or pressure);

• limitation principle: equipment is designed to reduce the impact of an accidental event.
