Overview

ABSTRACT

Although the MADS/MOSAR method has been taught for over 20 years, yet it is rarely used to date. However, its driving principle based on the notion of process (source-flow-target) is perfectly adapted to current requirements in matic, exhaustive, coherent and logical approaches. In addition, it can be applied to industrial risks, as well as to natural and urban risks. It also allows for the analysis of operational, psychosocial or even financial risks. Such transversality requires certain implementation rules. This innovative presentation is the result of around two decades of analysis with this method. Its objective is to explain its driving principle from a practical angle, by providing advice at every single stage of the analysis. The advantages and drawbacks of the MADS/MOSAR method are also listed.

 INTRODUCTION

The aim of this presentation is to complement the articles [SE 4 060] and [SE 4 061] on the MOSAR method with a very "practical" look at the implementation of MADS-MOSAR.

Today, it's clear that while this method is still taught, it's rarely applied. Today, we know that its principles are sound, but that its implementation is cumbersome and tedious, that it is reserved for experts, and that the ratio of time spent to work produced is far too high.

The aim here is to reverse this perception and convince the reader of the many advantages of MADS-MOSAR, particularly in comparison with other methodologies.

This work is the fruit of almost 20 years' experience in using MADS-MOSAR to analyze the risks of a wide variety of systems. Using this methodology as a basis for providing services in an engineering and design department means asking a lot of questions and finding the answers that will enable us to produce a cost-effective analysis that meets expectations, particularly regulatory ones.

All this experience and work will be presented in this article, with the constant concern to focus the presentation of the method on a "practical" aspect, essential to its appropriation.

Some may see this as a departure from the conventional MADS-MOSAR presentation, particularly in previous articles. Such a break seems to be the price of its operationality.
