Managing chemical risks in ELV depollution operations

As with any chemical risk assessment, the first step is to identify hazardous chemical agents (HCAs). These may either be present in the ELV, or emitted by the various ELV dismantling operations. Some of these ACDs are classified as CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic).

For the record, an ELV is defined as a vehicle that has reached the end of its useful life or has been involved in an accident and cannot be repaired. To facilitate the identification of chemical agents, it should be remembered that the following components are removed during dismantling:

• drain oil and other lubricants ;

• BRAKE FLUID ;

• brake linings ;

• airbag ;

• coolant ;
