When opening the fuel tank, employees may come into contact with gasoline that drips onto their forearms, as well as being inhaled. The two routes of exposure are cutaneous and respiratory. Gasoline contains benzene, a carcinogenic aromatic solvent. The benzene content of gasoline was limited to 1% v/v in 2000. The regulatory 8-hour VLEP for benzene is currently 1 ppm or 3.25 mg/m ³ . Employers must have their employees' exposure to benzene tested annually by an accredited body. The organization must establish a measurement strategy based on the employer's chemical risk assessment.
