2. Fundamental concepts
The "dependability" approach and reasoning are based on a number of basic concepts that have been refined over the years (see History) and continue to be refined today. Going through this basic vocabulary is therefore a classic introduction to dependability. The reader will find other important definitions in a glossary.
2.1 Operational reliability
Ability of an entity to satisfy one or more required functions under given conditions.
Note that this concept can encompass reliability, availability, maintainability, safety, durability... or combinations of these capabilities.
In the broadest sense, SoF is considered to be the science of failures and breakdowns
