2.1 Conditions for the occurrence of a torch fire
When a liquid or gaseous jet of fuel from an accidental or deliberate leak emerges from a pipe or orifice and enters the ambient air at rest, the air mixes with the fuel through entrainment and diffusion. If this mixture is ignited by an ignition source, the torch fire takes the form of a diffusion flame (figure

). This is equivalent to describing the flame of a simple Bunsen burner with a fully enclosed air inlet
