ABSTRACT
Fume toxicity is one of the main factors which are responsible for incapacitation or death in the event of a fire. Fumes are dangerous due to their chemical components and high temperature. Although the qualitative assessment of fume toxicity may appear simple it nonetheless depends on the concentration of the pollutant and the length of exposure. However, the effects can be immediate or delayed. Similarly, chronic or environmental effects have to be distinguished from acute exposures. Models are available in order to calculate the risks induced by inhaling fire smokes. Some of these models even have the ability to combine the effects of the substances or assess the intensity of long-term effects.

INTRODUCTION
