REUT is not a one-size-fits-all solution; it must be part of a comprehensive approach, particularly by addressing five pillars simultaneously: conserving water to eliminate unnecessary consumption, using water efficiently to reduce losses and improve yields, complementarity of uses by balancing needs and resources according to spatial and temporal contexts, the restoration and preservation of ecosystems through actions such as groundwater recharge or nature-based solutions, and, finally, the economic integration of the resource’s environmental value. However, several challenges remain, particularly regarding infrastructure management and water quality. Long-term effects depend on the effectiveness of wastewater treatment, facility maintenance, public policies, and the management strategies implemented. Rigorous management and careful monitoring of REUT systems are essential to ensure their...
