ABSTRACT
This paper presents the physical phenomena related to acoustic propagation in an outdoor environment, whatever the sound sources present: road or rail noise, industrial noise, wind noise, etc. We focus here on the particular influence of boundary conditions on the acoustic field: effects of reflection and absorption by the ground, scattering by the surface roughness, diffuse reflection by the buildings, etc. This article also presents how these physical processes can be numerically modeled - e.g. mapping, impact studies - and experimentally characterized (in-situ measurements).

This article therefore looks at the effects of boundaries (soil, buildings, obstacles, etc.) on acoustic propagation, particularly in urban environments, focusing on the physical phenomena involved, irrespective of the sound sources present: reflection, diffraction and scattering by building elements and street clutter, absorption by treated or vegetated surfaces, etc. Some of these physical phenomena have already been partially addressed in the article
