Overview

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the development of innovative biological processes based upon the immobilization of arsenic by microbian transformation. It describes the biogeochemical cycle of this metalloid by insisting on the role played by microorganisms in its speciation. The properties of arsenic, responsible for its presence in the aquatic environment and toxicity are presented. This article then deals with on-going researches on alternative bioprocesses to chemical processes currently used for the treatment of arsenic contaminated waters.

 INTRODUCTION

This article reviews the development of innovative biological processes based on the immobilization of arsenic through microbial transformation. It describes the biogeochemical cycle of this metalloid, emphasizing the role played by microorganisms in its speciation. It presents the properties of arsenic that are responsible for its presence in the aquatic environment and its toxicity. It then looks at current research into alternative bioprocesses to the chemical methods currently used to treat arsenic-contaminated water.
