The concept of sustainable development began to gain media coverage in the 1970s, when awareness of a new problem arose: the growing consumption of natural resources by an exponentially growing population in a finite space. The Limits to Growth report, also known as the "Meadows Report", published at the request of the Club of Rome in 1972, was one of the first international reports to warn of the ecological dangers of economic and demographic growth according to the model of the time.

The term "sustainable development" first appeared in 1987, with the publication of the report Our Common Future, also known as the "Brundtland Report", after Gro Harlem Brundtland, then President of the World Commission on Environment and Development and former Prime Minister of Norway.
