Measuring odors

An odor is a sensation resulting from the stimulation of our olfactory system by molecules known as odorants. Depending on its characteristics (frequency, intensity, nature), this odor can cause discomfort.

To account for these phenomena in the case of emissions into the atmosphere, experts have at their disposal a panoply of tools corresponding to each of the three main components of the problem:

• physico-chemical dosing tools, corresponding to the various chemical analysis techniques traditionally used to monitor air quality;

• odor quantification tools, which quantify odors in terms of odor concentration or olfactory intensity;

• nuisance characterization tools, to assess the tolerance of local populations to odors.
