Adaptation; adaptation
Accommodation of natural or human systems to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, in order to mitigate disadvantages or exploit advantages.
Mitigation
Anthropogenic intervention to reduce the sources or increase the sinks of greenhouse gases.
Gaz à effet de serre (GES); greenhouse gases (GHG)
Gaseous constituents of the atmosphere, both natural and anthropogenic, which absorb infrared radiation. The greenhouse gases concerned by climate negotiations are listed in Annex A of the Kyoto Protocol: methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (HFCs), sulfur hexafluoride and carbon dioxide (CO2). In quantity and due to its long lifetime in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main greenhouse gas.
