6. Chloramines
6.1 Introduction
Chloramines are mainly used in Anglo-Saxon countries, where the chlorine taste they impart to the water is a guarantee of good disinfection.
Compared with chlorine, they have the advantage of a much longer service life, which makes them even more attractive for hot water and long, meshed distribution networks, where re-chlorination after leaving the treatment plant is not desirable.
Due to their lower germicidal activity, the doses to be used are high (1 ppm residual when leaving the factory). They should therefore not be used if the consumer fears chlorine tastes.
