3. European framework
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) of October 23, 2000 (Directive 2000/60/EC) establishes a framework for a comprehensive EU water policy. It defines the principle of balanced, sustainable management of water resources at the level of major European river basins, and sets objectives for preserving and restoring the status of groundwater and surface water bodies.
The WFD structures water policy in the member states of the European Union.
