As we approach the limits of renewable resources, resolute and coordinated efforts are needed to control demand for water, monitor withdrawals and uses, and ensure effective public support by instilling new behaviours in users.
The pursuit of the supply management policy is accompanied by the gradual introduction of demand management tools to rationalize water use and limit wastage. In the drinking water sector, demand management adopted by SONEDE combines technical instruments (widespread use of individual metering, improved network efficiency, consumption audits) and economic instruments (adaptation of tariffs to usage sectors and consumption levels), and offers the prospect of better control over water demand....
