A gel is a thermodynamically stable solid-liquid two-phase system consisting of a continuous three-dimensional interpenetrating double network, one solid and one liquid. Flory has proposed a classification of gels that applies equally to organic and inorganic gels:
lamellar gels such as mesophase and clay gels;
polymer-type covalently bonded gels ;
gels formed by the physical aggregation (crystallization) of polymeric chains;
