1. Definition of a paint
According to the Technical Dictionary of Paints and Application Works, "a paint is a liquid or powder product, containing pigments, intended to be applied to a surface to form an opaque film endowed with particular protective, decorative or technical qualities".
The terminology of the main constituents commonly used in paint formulation is that defined in standard NF T 36-001 of June 1988 (cf.
).
Pigments: substances generally present in the form of fine particles, practically insoluble in the usual suspension media, used for certain optical, protective or decorative properties.
