The problem of designing batch plants is a major industrial issue, and forms part of a series of decisions ranging from the definition of the company's strategic choices to the optimization of production (figure 9 ). Increasingly, the current economic context is making the empiricist approach to workshop design, which in many cases led to over-equipment, untenable.
