1.1 Biorefinery concept

A biorefinery is a global technological system defined as a combination of physical, chemical and/or biological deconstruction, separation and functionalization technologies (figure 1 ) designed to sustainably transform biomass into intermediate or finished commercial products: food, feed, chemicals, materials (including fibers) and energy.
