7. Safety in industrial electrolysis: risk analysis
Electrolysis cells are live devices through which high-current direct current flows. Cells connected in series add up to potential differences of up to several hundred volts.
All electrolysis equipment is obviously insulated from earth, for example by means of insulators between cells and supports. However, the environment around a "series" of electrolysis cells almost always includes conductive parts (frameworks, piping, etc.) that are earthed. There is therefore a significant risk of current flow between the electrolysis equipment and the ground, if the insulation is broken, for example by accidental contact with metal parts (pipes, tools, etc.), or by man himself, if he is not electrically insulated from the ground.
