To separate a non-ideal A-B binary mixture, a light carrier can be added (its boiling temperature is lower than that of A and B, TB > TA > TE); intermediate (TB > TE > TA) or heavy (TE > TB > TA).
Once a process has been chosen, the main criterion for selecting an entrainer for distillation is the feasibility of total reflux separation according to the principles outlined in this dossier. This is supplemented by economic and thermodynamic criteria such as selectivity.
