9. Fume dispersion
Even after thorough dedusting, a certain amount of dust will remain in the purified gas. It is therefore important to ensure that the fumes are properly dispersed, so that the concentrations that can be reached at ground level or in neighbouring buildings remain within acceptable limits. In most cases, this is achieved by means of chimneys that disperse both particles and gaseous pollutants such as sulphur oxides, hydrochloric acid and nitrogen oxides.
Several theories and formulas, including Turner's, give the concentration of a pollutant as a function of the initial concentration, the relative coordinates of the emission point and the flow rate.
