2. Operating variables
The main operating variables that determine the gasification process are :
the nature of the hydrocarbon load;
oxygen/charge and water vapor/charge ratios;
pressure ;
the use of flame-temperature moderating gases other than water vapor, e.g. nitrogen (air gasification) or carbon dioxide.
One of the features of the Shell process is that it can handle a wide variety of feedstocks: natural gas, naphtha, heavy fuel oil, vacuum distillation residue (VDR), visbreaking residue (thermal cracking of VDR) or asphalt obtained by solvent extraction (propane, butane or pentane) of heavy feedstocks.
