From a thermodynamic point of view [1], the unsaturated hydrocarbons we're looking for are only stable in relation to the saturated hydrocarbons that give rise to them at relatively high temperatures (> 350°C). This fact is illustrated in figure 1, which shows the variation, as a function of temperature T (in kelvins), of the free energy of formation relative to a carbon atom, for a number of characteristic hydrocarbon compounds.
