2.1.1 Defining the selectivity required
Two types of selectivity can be distinguished:
the selectivity of the hydrogenation reaction itself, i.e. the formation of a specific hydrogenated compound to the detriment of the formation of other hydrogenated compounds;
the selectivity of the hydrogenation reaction compared with competing reactions such as oligomerization (dimerization or trimerization) or isomerization by double bond displacement.
