Ionic liquids are classified according to the following characteristics:
protic or aprotic character;
sensitivity to water and oxygen;
the special characteristics of anions ;
toxicity and potential impact on the environment.
An ionic liquid is protic if it results from the transfer of a proton from an acid to a base in the Bronsted sense, and if the proportion of non-ionized salt in the liquid state is less than 1%.
