Food packaging is the world's third largest industry, accounting for around 2% of the gross national product of developed countries. New approaches, often based on nanotechnology, are being widely developed to improve food packaging in order to achieve sustainable, cost-effective protection of foodstuffs. These new technologies require appropriate regulatory and legislative frameworks. For this reason, government agencies around the world are working intensively to define new regulations on emerging aspects of nanotechnology. This global process has been underway since Kraft Foods (now "Mondelēz International") launched its first nanotechnology laboratory in 2000, and the "Nanotek" consortium of fifteen universities and national laboratories, to fund research into personalized or "intelligent" foods, such as research into nano-products.
