2. Fundamental aspects
The phenomena associated with atomization fall within the scope of the study of heterogeneous jets, i.e. the semi-infinite cross-sectional introduction of one fluid into another. Unlike homogeneous jets, whose mechanisms and description are well known, several mechanisms are involved in heterogeneous jets, many aspects of which are still under investigation.
2.1 Spray mechanisms
In order to break up a liquid continuum into individualized parcels of smaller characteristic dimensions, cohesive forces within the liquid must be overcome. From a few dozen molecular layers upwards, when the hydrodynamic hypothesis applies - i.e. a continuous medium can be assumed - these forces take the form of viscosity within the liquid and surface tension at the liquid/gas or liquid/solid...
