1.1.1 General Information
A heterogeneous system consists of phases separated by interfaces. At equilibrium and in the absence of external forces, the value of any thermodynamic quantity is constant at any point within a phase. At the interfaces, many properties can change more or less abruptly, such as material density, intermolecular interaction energy, entropy, etc., while others, such as chemical potential or temperature, remain constant.
