While cutting, welding and surface cleaning operations based on the physical effects of ultrasonics and cavitation are the subject of numerous industrial applications, the field of acoustic cavitation-induced chemistry, or sonochemistry, remains relatively undeveloped. Today, the technique is booming, with a wide range of applications in organic synthesis chemistry, materials preparation, environmental treatment and electrochemistry.
