9. Glossary

Function

Action of a product or one of its components expressed exclusively in terms of purpose. A function is expressed by an infinitive verb followed by a complement. It must disregard any reference to solutions (AFNOR standard NF X 50-151).

Service function (FS)

Function expected of a product (or performed by it) to meet the needs of a given user.

Need

Fundamental requirement that necessitates the creation of the product; it's the expression just necessary.

Product

A product must be the best compromise, at a given time and in a given context, to satisfy the user's needs at the lowest possible cost.
